As you can see, sometimes the males do appear nearly golden overall - and minutes later red and purple with some green, etc..

Cheers

The very first photo in this thread, it's out of focus. But that's how they mostly look like for me. It's yellow/golden. But not brilliant.
When in the mood, one is like on Christophe's photos. The other has purple in stead of red.
Give a man a fish, he'll eat it and fall asleep.

Teach a man to fish and he'll endanger an entire species.

Hi,

Exactly, if the males are in the "mood" they get dark and red/purple/green/blue intensifies, you see the typical black vertical fasciata-stripes. If they are calm, the yellow-golden colour comes more out, you see this in 2 of Christophe's photos. What I like most with these chilatherinas, but is impossible to catch in a 2-dimensional static photo, is the changing of the structural colors (yellow-green-red-blue) due to motion - like the sparkling of a jewel... :D

But if you are looking for the real golden colour, you should have a look at the females - like pure gold! :D Don't underrate the females

Hi,

These pictures make me look forward to my own Chilatherina fasciata Pagai I got from Johannes 2 months ago. Mine are still very little (2 - 2,5 cm) and still show no colours, but I can see they will become very, very nice looking fish.

As a precaution, I already gave away the Chilatherina fasciata Faowi I had (among which a big male of 13 cm!!!) because their colour scheme is quite close - especially for females - and I don't want to take any risk of mixing both species.

I took the same precaution when I got Chilatherina fasciata Clear water Creek (also from Johannes) and got rid of my Chilatherina sentianensis because both females look very similar too.

Cheers,

Joël

Hi Hans
It's Etroplus canarensis, a dwarf cichlid from South-Western India (Karnataka). I have a group of 6. It is probably the most peaceful cichlid I've ever had, and it displays a true schooling behaviour - much more than the rainbows :-)
I hope to be able to breed them soon, they have only been bred rarely and were first imported some years back, after the species had been "lost" for more than a century.
Cheers

Still rather small (under 3"/7cm TL) but these are really nice fish

Image

The fish should be about 6 months old. When i got them they were about 1"/2,5cm TL. I have the fish in my tank since february now and they are growing rather quickly.

They have a real nice colour pattern. I like these very much! Especially the red/orange in the fins.

My few fasciata "Pagai River" grew quite quickly in the last few weeks. They are almost full sized fish now :)

I´m still in awe of the variations in colour these fish show, all very subtle, but all very much like a well composed painting.
One thing I have not yet managed to capture is the intense orange/yellow stripe they can summon from their nose across the back.

They are gorgeous fish. They look a bit similar to the Mamberamo form with that lovely red tail.
Slightly off topic but how big do fasciata strains get.I was reading a TFH article my Hans Mayland on rainbows of Irianjaya and he state that fasciata "mamberamo"got to 8 inches.I found that hard to believe

Most strains grow up to 5 or 6" in size. The mamberano strain grows considerably larger somehow
