Lake Ainsworth -Melanotaenia duboulayi

Postby bettaman » Sun Jan 03, 2010 4:10 am

I was out and about searching for some natives and was looking at then ANGFA database for some blue eyes. I search a location near me at broken head, just south of byron bay.

The location was called Taylors lake, a tea tree lake. I caught a few small fish but was unsure what they were...they looked like blue eyes but were very dark. For some reason i convinced myself they werent blue eyes but gambusia as they were too dark.

A little discouraged i went home and thought i would pop into lennox head on the way back and try lake ainsworth. I didnt think i would catch anything good at all as i knew the lake was full of gambusia. Anyway... threw my net in and to my surprise caught about 20 Melanotaenia duboulayi which were very similar to the richmond river variety with nice red fins.

On inspection of the catch i had a look at the gambusia and notice they were very different to the smaller fish i caught eariler at Taylors lake. I had taken a blury photo of the small fish i caught eariler and in comparison they looked very different. I now think that i actually did catch blue eyes eariler and they looked different to there normal yellowish colour as they might have been darken by the tea tree lake conditions.

Anyway, here are some photos of Lake Ainsworth and the fish. Sorry for the poor qaulity.

Lake Ainsworth, yes im using a (new) nappy bucket hahaha.

I assume 'Taylor’s Lake' is the same as 'Taylor’s Lagoon'?

It is a little brackish??

Anyway, these are some of the fishes that have been found in that lake:

Pseudomugil signifer
Philypnodon spp.
Mugil cephlaus
