Rainbowfish species
Rainbowfishes (Melanotaeniidae) are separated into 7 groups: Cairnsichthys, Chilatherina, Glossolepis, Iriatherina, Melanotaenia, Pelangia and Rhadinocentrus. They occur in most of Australia (except in the Southern regions where it is too cold for them), most of the surrounding islands and all over New Guinea.

They are found in freshwater rivers and swamps, and brackish estuaries along the eastern coast of Australia, from southern New South Wales to northern Queensland, across the Northern Territory to northern Western Australia and coastal areas in southern New Guinea, plus almost all the surrounding offshore islands.
